") jump to navigation able main welcome... able is a project developed by dundee educational psychology service in partnership with other education department colleagues and nhs tayside. its main purpose is to support teachers and other staff in providing for the wide range of learner needs that can be seen in most mainstream classrooms and early years settings what is able? the able approach is based on the idea that successful learning takes place when the learning profiles of each member of the group or class interact positively with the learning environment on offer. the word ‘inclusion’ is the name given to the process by which the learning environment is adapted to ensure it 'fits' with the learners’ approach to learning as much as possible. the effectiveness of any adaptation is improved when all members of the group or class, including adults and children, are engaged in developing them the able material is based on two mindmaps - one focused on the learning environment and one focused on the learner. these maps are used to help the adult (often the teacher) to think about ways of adapting their approach to meet the needs of everyone in their group or class there are supporting materials for 'taking a closer look' at particular areas and a range of ideas or strategies for each area. experience tells us that the materials are best used collaboratively by all those supporting a child, following initial training and support. in an able school or nursery, the use of labelling is minimised staff recognise that every child has a unique profile of strengths and areas of difficulty, and mobilise this diversity to help address individual needs the staff have a framework, shared between all staff and with children and parents, for noticing differences in response to the education on offer learner needs are met by making adjustments to the learning environment, and by involving the learner as much as possible in the process whenever possible the adjustments to the learning environment are made part of what is routinely available for everyone, rather than being something 'special' for just one person. getting involved for more information about the able approach, contact us at [email protected] what do teachers say?
